Paul Guinery studied piano and organ at the Royal College of Music where he was also a répétiteur in the opera school. Whilst still a student he performed Berg’s Chamber Concerto with the RCM’s 20th Century Ensemble and won the accompanist’s prize, adjudicated by Gerald Moore. He then took a degree in modern languages at Oxford.
As a pianist, Paul works extensively with the wind quintet Harmoniemusik especially in London and in Cornwall where the group have their own annual chamber-music festival, but also abroad including tours of Germany. Paul has recorded a CD with them, aired by BBC Radio 3. He has also made recordings of music by Rachmaninov and an anthology of British piano music Delius and his Circle.
Paul is chairman of the Delius Trust and has published Delius and his Music in which he broke new ground in providing for the first time detailed analyses of the composer’s complete works.
For many years Paul was a staff announcer for BBC World Service and for the BBC’s cultural network, Radio 3, presenting many of the Proms concerts and working closely with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He can still be heard on the air as a radio newsreader.
He has recently recorded Dicky Bird Hop, a critically acclaimed CD of light-music piano solos by English composers and has followed this with a sequel Chasing Moonbeams which is due to be released this coming May.
