Hongkong-born pianist CHIYAN WONG’S boldness and vision have captivated listeners with a repertoire spanning the early Baroque to the 21st century. Highlights of recent seasons include his Paris debut at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Hungarian premiere of Thomas Adès’ Piano Concerto at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Wong’s CD recordings have received critical acclaim. For his debut album for LINN Records (Liszt Transfigured), he was awarded the 40th Franz Liszt International Grand Prix du Disque by the Franz Liszt Society in Hungary. For his second album, he recorded his version of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, based on the edition by Ferruccio Busoni. In 2023, “SWING!” a recording for Platoon/Apple Music consisting of jazz-influenced music by Alexander Tsfasman and Maurice Ravel, in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra and Christoph Koncz.
After debuting at prestigious venues such as the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Wigmore Hall, where he gave an all-Liszt recital, Wong first gained international attention in earlier festival debuts such as the International Music Festival in Dinard, France, the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Singapore International Piano Festival. Wong began his musical education in Hong Kong and moved to England at the age of twelve to study with Norma Fisher at Chethams School of Music and with Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music in London. His interest in composition led him to work with Thomas Adès at the Prussia Cove International Musicians’ Seminar and to study counterpoint with Naji Hakim in Paris. These encounters have had a strong influence on Wong’s musical work. Wong completed his PhD on Busoni at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He now lives in Berlin.
